Gape limitation and piscine prey size-selection by yellow perch in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan, with emphasis on two exotic prey items

چکیده
The trophic linkage between yellow perch Perca flavescens and two exotic prey items, alewife Alosa pseudoharengus and round goby Neogobius melanostomus, was investigated in the extreme southern area of Lake Michigan during the summer of 2002. Yellow perch 100mm total length, LT (n1⁄4 1293) exhibited size selective feeding, with 148 fish containing round gobies and 120 fish containing alewives. The mean round goby LT, preyed on by yellow perch, was 23% of the predator LT, with a range of 7 to 47%, and mean alewife LT was 32% of yellow perch LT, with a range of 18 to 46%. Although the selection of prey size by yellow perch increased proportionally with yellow perch LT, prey consumed appeared smaller than theoretically possible based on gape size. # 2005 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

Seasonal changes in icefish diel feeding patterns in Lake Chaohu, a large shallow eutrophic lake of China
Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and...

The diet overlap between young-of-the-year (YOY) perch and burbot in the pelagic zone of Lake Constance during spring and summer was investigated in relation to gape size limitation. Because perch were larger and grew faster than burbot during their early life history, perch overcame gape size limitation for various zooplankton taxa earlier than burbot. The interspecific diet overlap between pe...
متن کاملColonizing Inland Lakes: Consequences of YOY Fish Ingesting the Spiny Cladoceran (Bythotrephes cederstroemi)
Recently the exotic cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemi colonized inland lakes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, facing warmer temperatures and greater exposure to smaller fish than in coastal waters of Lake Superior. However, the long caudal appendage (spine) of Bythotrephes protects it against young-of-the-year (YOY) fish predation. After experience, small fish (30-60 mm TL) develop aversi...
